Vintage Ludwig & Ludwig Snare Drum Solid Single Ply Shell 4x14 1920s missing throwoff

Vintage Ludwig & Ludwig 4x14 Snare Drum 1920s | Solid Single Ply Shell, Collector Grade Project

On consignment with West Coast Drum Shop is a Vintage Ludwig & Ludwig 4x14 Snare Drum from the 1920s. This drum represents an early era of American drum making, featuring a solid single ply wood shell, single flanged hoops, and mostly-original nickel hardware. This historic piece is an attractive option for collectors, restorers, and vintage drum enthusiasts seeking an authentic Ludwig & Ludwig example with classic proportions and period-correct construction.

Please Note: this drum is sold as-is with a missing snare strainer. No returns are accepted on used or consignment items. We encourage you to inquire if you have any questions or concerns.

Condition & Build Quality

Overall condition is fair consistent with a century of age and use. The shell and hardware show scuffs, light rust on metal parts, and shallow dents. Hardware operation is surprisingly smooth for its age. According to our inspection, the tension rods, throw-off mounting hardware, and butt plate screws turn freely. The majority of hardware appears to be original nickel, with the exception of the tension rods and two or three hoop claws that look to be later replacements. The single flanged hoops present well and are in-round. Interior and bearing edges reflect typical hand-worked finishing from the period. Please note that the snare strainer is missing, and the drum is sold as-is due to age and consignment status.

Sound & Playing Feel

Because the original throw-off is absent, we did not mount wires for a full modern snare evaluation. At low head tension without wires, the shell produces a big, bold, warm, and fat response with a wide, rounded fundamental and vintage wood character. The existing heads are old and the snare side shows small perforations, so we avoided additional stress testing. For a player willing to source period-correct parts and replace heads, this shell architecture is known for quick articulation, woody rimshots, and musical sensitivity in small venues and studio rooms.
