Vintage Tama 5x14 AW-555 1980 Artwood Birch Snare Drum w/ SKB Case

Vintage Tama 5x14 AW-555 Artwood Birch Snare Drum w/ SKB Case

The Vintage Tama AW-555 Artwood Birch Snare Drum represents an important chapter in Tama history, combining early-1980s Japanese craftsmanship with innovative hardware that helped establish Tama as a major force in professional drum design. This harder-to-find 5x14 configuration features a 6-ply, 9mm Japanese birch shell that delivers the focused attack, projection, and articulation birch drums became known for throughout the era.

One standout feature of this drum is its early implementation of Tama's Mastercraft snare system. The AW-555 was among the first drums to incorporate Tama's Mastercraft throw-off design. This drum retains its original extended-wire Mastercraft system including the guide rollers, throw-off mechanism, butt plate, and original Made-in-Japan Tama 6035 extended snare wires. The ribbon material has been replaced while preserving the functionality of the original design. Please note that the original Made-in-Japan 6035 wires were reinstalled after product photography was completed and may not appear in listing images. The drum also retains its original Tama die-cast hoops, contributing to its collectible appeal and focused, articulate sound.

Condition & Build Quality

Built in Japan during Tama's highly regarded early 1980s production years, this AW-555 features a robust 6-ply, 9mm Japanese birch shell construction designed for durability and consistency. The thicker shell design provides a powerful fundamental note while maintaining excellent articulation and projection.

The original Mastercraft hardware system remains one of this drum's defining features. Tama engineered this extended snare wire design to maximize snare response and sensitivity while maintaining a broad tuning range. The guide roller mechanism allows for smooth operation and even wire engagement across the drumhead.

The 5x14 size in this Artwood Birch configuration is hard to find, making this an especially attractive piece for collectors and players looking to secure an uncommon example from Tama's formative Mastercraft era.

An included SKB hard case provides secure transport and storage protection for this vintage instrument.

Sound & Playing Feel

The 6-ply Japanese birch shell produces a focused tonal character with crisp attack, controlled sustain, and impressive projection. Japanese birch naturally emphasizes clarity and note definition, giving this snare excellent articulation while maintaining warmth and body suitable for both studio and live applications.

The original Mastercraft extended wire system contributes additional sensitivity and responsiveness, helping the drum maintain excellent ghost note articulation while still producing authoritative backbeats. The original Tama die-cast hoops further enhance the focused attack, tuning stability, and articulate rimshots associated with classic Tama drums from this era.
