Group Class: Drum Tuning Workshop with Will Andrews

Drum Tuning Group Lesson with Will Andrews at West Coast Drum Shop

This drum tuning group lesson is designed for drummers who want to develop a deeper understanding of how to achieve great sound from their kit. Led by Will Andrews, this session focuses on practical, real-world tuning concepts that translate directly to live performance, studio recording, and everyday playing situations.

What You Will Learn

This group lesson breaks down the core concepts of drum tuning in a clear, approachable way. While there are no rigid rules, there are proven fundamentals that can help you consistently achieve better sound.

  • How to tension and tune each drum individually
  • Understanding batter vs. resonant head relationships
  • How tuning impacts feel, response, and projection
  • How to shape the overall sound of your kit as one instrument
  • How room acoustics influence drum sound
  • When and how to use dampening (gel, tape, etc.)

Philosophy and Approach

Tuning is subjective. There is no universal correct sound, and what works in one setting may not work in another. This lesson emphasizes developing your ear and understanding how to make adjustments based on your specific musical context.

Who This Is For

  • Beginner to intermediate drummers looking to improve their sound
  • Advanced players wanting more consistency in live or studio settings
  • Students preparing for recording sessions or auditions
  • Anyone frustrated with inconsistent or unclear drum tone
