Jeff Hamilton Drum Clinic

Jeff Hamilton will be joined by Akiko Tsuruga on Hammond B3 for an intimate performance, and drum education event at West Coast Drum Shop on Tuesday, July 30th, 2024. All skill levels and music fans are welcome to attend.

Jeff Hamilton, born on August 4, 1953, in Richmond, Indiana, is a celebrated American jazz drummer renowned for his impeccable technique, swinging style, and musical versatility. His early passion for drums led him to study music at Indiana University, where legendary drummer John Von Ohlen mentored him. Hamilton's career took off in the mid-1970s when he joined the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and later the Woody Herman Orchestra.

In the 1980s, Hamilton co-founded the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra with bassist John Clayton and saxophonist Jeff Clayton. This ensemble became a cornerstone of his career, allowing him to explore big band drumming with remarkable artistry. Hamilton also gained prominence as a member of the L.A. Four, an innovative jazz quartet blending classical, jazz, and Latin influences, and as the drummer for the Oscar Peterson Trio, where he further solidified his reputation as a master of swing and subtlety.

Throughout his career, Hamilton has collaborated with a plethora of jazz greats, including Diana Krall, Ray Brown, and Monty Alexander, and has recorded numerous albums as both a sideman and a leader. His drumming is characterized by a deep sense of groove, lyrical phrasing, and a keen ability to support and elevate the music of his bandmates.

In addition to his performance career, Jeff Hamilton is a dedicated educator, conducting clinics and workshops worldwide, inspiring the next generation of drummers with his knowledge and passion for jazz. His contributions to the jazz community have earned him widespread respect and admiration, cementing his legacy as one of the genre's foremost drummers.

This appearance of Mapex artist Jeff Hamilton has been made possible, in part, through an educational grant from Mapex drums and the KHS America Academic Alliance. Jeff Hamilton performs exclusively on Mapex drums.
